The Nintendo Switch 2 has finally launched, and it’s been a long time coming. There were whispers of a Switch Pro for years, leaving many fans, including me, waiting and wondering when we’d see new, top-tier games on a Nintendo console again. The wait is over, and it seems worth it.
### A Solid Upgrade in Design and Graphics
The Switch 2 enhances everything I loved about the original. It boasts a 7.9-inch 120Hz screen with stunning 1080P clarity. While an OLED display would have been ideal, the visuals look sharp nonetheless. Plus, you can play games in 4K or at lower resolutions up to 120Hz. Many original Switch games work on this new console, often with updated features to enhance performance.
The gameplay experience has improved significantly. My favorite game, which runs at 4K and 60 frames per second on the Switch 2, only costs $10 if you buy the upgraded version; it’s free for active Nintendo Switch Online members. I’ve also been enjoying classic GameCube titles now available through the online service.
### Storing Games Presents a Challenge
One downside I’ve encountered is the 256GB of internal storage. For someone like me with a large digital library, it’s not nearly enough. Upgrading storage requires a microSD Express card, which can be pricey. I hope future hardware revisions improve storage and perhaps even introduce an OLED display. By then, I’d like to see those microSD cards become more affordable, too.
Nintendo set the Switch 2’s starting price at $449.99. While that took some by surprise, the pricing aligns with the advanced technology. Nintendo is shifting its development focus fully to this console, which hints at exciting exclusive titles to come.
### Gaining Access to New Games
The Switch 2 also brings more opportunities for gamers looking to try out new titles. Numerous free demos for upcoming games, like other popular franchises, are available, allowing players to test before purchasing.
As I jump back into my backlog, I feel good about my decision to wait. Playing older games like the ones I missed out on in the past is more enjoyable on this improved hardware, especially when gaming on a larger screen.
