Funcom, the owner of the Dune: Awakening game, is laying off staff and shutting down the developer The Outsiders as it restructures operations.
Funcom’s restructuring plans announced
Funcom stated that the layoffs are part of a major transition from game development to ongoing operation. They acknowledged that this shift, along with preparations for a major console release next year, necessitates a realignment of teams and resources.
The company regrettably noted that this restructuring would mean saying goodbye to valued employees. Funcom has not yet specified how many staff members will be affected.
Closure of The Outsiders studio confirmed
David Goldfarb, the founder of The Outsiders, shared that all team members would be affected by the layoffs, leading to the studio’s closure. He expressed hope that the team would still pursue future projects in some new form.
Funcom’s game success and future outlook
Despite the layoffs, Funcom reported that Dune: Awakening had a successful launch, selling one million copies shortly after its June release. They referred to this launch as their “biggest release” in 32 years.
The game has shown significant potential, but the company is now focused on maintaining successful live operations and achieving future growth.
