The New York Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll on Monday after the team fell to a 2-8 record in the 2025 season. Daboll had a three-plus year record of 20 wins, 40 losses, and one tie. Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka has been appointed as interim head coach.
Ownership’s decision and history of coaching changes
Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch allowed Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen to continue after a poor combined record of 9-25 over the past two seasons. However, fans were aware that Daboll needed to improve in 2025 or risk being fired.
Mara expressed his impatience with the team’s performance, stating he expected quick results. After the Giants’ ongoing struggles, Mara lost faith in Daboll, although Schoen has not been dismissed yet.
Daboll’s tenure and offensive struggles
Daboll was known for his offensive prowess but could not maintain success after winning the AP NFL Coach of the Year award in 2022. The Giants finished 30th and 31st in scoring during the subsequent seasons, with records of 6-11 and 3-14.
Daboll attempted to revamp the offense by releasing quarterback Daniel Jones and signing veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. However, the strategy faltered, leading to a shaky start to the season.
Injury concerns and coach’s decisions
Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart showed promise but suffered a concussion in a loss to the Bears. Despite facing multiple injuries, including hamstring and ankle issues, Dart’s aggressive play style was not sufficiently protected under Daboll’s leadership.
In Week 6, Daboll faced criticism for entering the medical tent during Dart’s concussion check, resulting in fines for both the team and himself. As the Giants search for a new full-time head coach, they aim to improve from their overall record of 53-104-1 since 2015.
