Texas and Penn State dropped from the AP Top 25 on Sunday after both lost to unranked teams, leaving the preseason Nos. 1 and 2 teams unranked.
Ohio State held its position at No. 1 with 40 first-place votes. Miami moved up to No. 2, earning 21 first-place votes after defeating Florida State on Saturday night.
Texas and Penn State’s Historic Drop
Both Texas and Penn State, who began the season ranked at No. 1 and No. 2, were eliminated from the rankings. This occurrence is rare, with only seven instances since 1950 where preseason top-ranked teams fell out during the season.
The last time this happened was in 2012 with preseason No. 1 USC. Historically, teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the preseason have never both fallen out of the rankings in the same season.
Current Rankings and Standouts
Oregon slipped to No. 3, followed by SEC teams Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma. Indiana is now No. 7 and Alabama is No. 8 after a win against Vanderbilt.
Texas Tech and Georgia round out the top 10. Texas Tech’s ranking is its highest since 2008, reflecting its notable performance during that season.
Upcoming Matches and Expectations
The upcoming week features several significant matchups, including No. 1 Ohio State against No. 17 Illinois, No. 7 Indiana at No. 3 Oregon, and No. 8 Alabama at No. 14 Missouri.
These games are crucial as teams try to establish or maintain their rankings amidst ongoing changes in the AP Top 25.
