Amazon plans to build a 2.5 million-square-foot data center in Kline Township, which will create hundreds of temporary and permanent jobs. Over 100 people attended a meeting to learn more about the project, expressing various concerns.

Details about the Data Center Project

The planned data center will be located off Lofty Road and consists of roughly 10 buildings. Amazon representatives discussed its economic benefits and answered public questions regarding infrastructure, water, electricity, and noise.

Amazon acquired a 346-acre site for approximately $178 million, previously designated for another warehouse development. The new data center will ultimately be smaller than the originally planned facility.

Job Creation and Community Involvement

Becky Ford, director of AWS’ Economic Development team, stated that the center will provide several hundred permanent jobs. Each of the nine main buildings will employ 25 to 30 full-time workers, alongside additional roles for support.

AWS will also offer skills training to local residents, countering misconceptions about job loss due to AI. Jobs will focus on construction and technical fields, ensuring availability for local residents.

Future Steps and Compliance

Amazon also plans to establish another data center in Banks Township and is currently developing one in Salem Township. The township supervisors did not make any decisions during the recent meeting.

Once Amazon submits its application, the Kline Township Planning Commission will review it, conduct hearings, and recommend its fate to the supervisors for their final decision.
